NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 19, 2019) -- Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Associate Commissioner Ellen O'Brien took her rightful place in Walt Whitman (MD) High School history last weekend, as she was inducted into the school's athletics hall of fame as a member of the Class of 2019. The event took place during the school's football game on Friday, Sept. 13.

A 2005 Walt Whitman graduate, O’Brien competed in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse, earning nine varsity letters during her four years as a Viking. She was a four-year starter in basketball scoring over 900 career points. Her senior year, O’Brien was captain of all three teams and earned second-team All-Met honors in field hockey, as well as all-county in basketball, field hockey, and lacrosse.

O’Brien continued her basketball career at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she was a three-year starter at the point guard position and a three-time all-conference honoree. In O’Brien’s senior year, she was the women’s NCAA statistical champion in the assist-to-turnover ratio category, with an average of 4.37. She remains the Denison women’s basketball career leader in assists with 461. In 113 games, Ellen shot 45% from the field, scored 792 points, and grabbed 181 steals.   Denison captured two regular season conference titles and three conference championship titles during her tenure, earning three trips to the NCAA tournament.

O’Brien graduated cum laude with a double major in sports management and psychology. She went on to earn her master’s degree at Ithaca College, while serving as a graduate assistant in the athletic department and assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.  In 2012, O’Brien accepted the position of Associate Commissioner of the CACC. She continues in that role today and enjoys working with the 14 member institutions to enhance the student-athlete experience.

The Whitman Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2009.

O'Brien's induction into her high school's hall of fame, marks the fifth hall-of-fame induction for current staff in the CACC office. CACC Commissioner Dan Mara is an inductee into four hall of fames during his career in intercollegiate coaching and administration.
