CACC Student-Athletes Recognized by the NJAIAW

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 5, 2013) – Four student-athletes from four different Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) institutions have been recognized by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW). Bloomfield’s Ashton Corely, Caldwell’s Torey Jones and Felician’s Allie Couzo, and Georgian Court’s Olivia Rotunno were each recognized as “Women of the Year” for their outstanding contributions on and off the field of play.

Olivia Rotunno, a lacrosse student-athlete at Georgian Court, and her fellow New Jersey institutional and high school honorees were guests of honor at the annual NJAIAW Woman of the Year luncheon on January 27, 2013.

A senior communications major and an integral member of two CACC lacrosse championship squads (2010, 2011), Olivia has enjoyed recent success off the field with her selection to the CACC Spring All-Academic Team last May (3.57 GPA) and the prestigious New Jersey Iota Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma (National College Athlete Honor Society). As Vice President of GCU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Olivia spearheaded an effort that created a $2,022 donation for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through Macy's 5th Annual "Believe" Campaign.

Ashton Corley, a softball student-athlete for Bloomfield College, has established herself as one of the premiere outfielders in the CACC and has racked up numerous academic awards.  She also is the fourth Bloomfield College softball player to be named the school's Woman of the Year in the past eight years.  She joins previous honorees Fauna Ryerson (2007), Sara Locke (2009) and Kira Wagar (2011).

Corley has been on the Dean's List at Bloomfield College every semester since her freshman year, is a three-time NFCA Academic All-American, a two-time Academic All-CACC honoree and was recognized with academic awards three times by the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association. She also currently serves as the President of the Bloomfield College Class of 2013.

On the field, Corley has been one of the Deacons’ top players since arriving in Bloomfield as a freshman in 2009.  Corley, a First Team All-CACC and Second Team All-East Region outfielder, comes into her senior season with 137 career hits and a career batting average of .331.

Torey Jones, a women’s basketball student-athlete at Caldwell, is nearing the end of an outstanding career for the Cougars. A two-time All-CACC First Team selection, she has scored 1,652 points to rank fourth on Caldwell’s all-time list. She also holds the program records for three-pointers made (213) and free throw shooting percentage (.805). A member of the All-East Region Second Team in 2010 and 2011, Jones has received All-ECAC and All-Met honors while also being named the CACC Freshman of the Year in 2009. Last spring she ran track for Caldwell’s inaugural track and field team, and helped the Cougars’ 4x400 relay team earn all-conference honors at the Collegiate Track Conference championships.

So far this season, Jones leads the Cougars in scoring at 17.1 points per game, which ranks fifth in the CACC. She is leading the conference in three-point shooting percentage (.413).

Allie Couzo, a senior women’s soccer student-athlete, owns a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average as a pre-physical therapy major. In the fall of 2012 she was accepted into a joint doctorate degree program in physical therapy with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). A student in Felician's honors program, she was a 2011 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar and was selected as the CACC Student-Athlete of the Month in September 2012. Couzo is a 2009 graduate of Sayreville War Memorial High.

Competitively, Couzo was a four-year starter at goalkeeper for the Golden Falcons. She was voted to All-CACC Second Team in 2011, and the CACC All-Tournament team in 2009. She ranks in the top three all-time at Felician in games played, wins, and solo shutouts by a keeper.
