WILMINGTON MEN, PHILADELPHIA WOMEN CAPTURE 2009-10 RESTAINO CUPS

NEW HAVEN, CT (June 1, 2010) – The Wilmington University men and Philadelphia University women have won the 2009-10 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Alfred R. Restaino, Sr., Cups in an announcement made by Commissioner Dan Mara. The cups are given annually to the institutions that perform the best across the board in CACC-sponsored sports.

The point system used for the award takes into account each team’s finish in both the CACC regular-season and conference tournament. Each school receives a combined point total, and that total is divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.

Wilmington claimed the men’s cup with 11.3 points after successful seasons by its baseball and golf teams in the spring. The baseball team took home a regular-season championship and the golf team was runner-up at the golf championship. The Wildcats also won the soccer regular-season title and was second at the cross country championship.

Dominican College finished second with 9.9 points behind a strong season by its baseball team, which won the CACC Tournament Championship and finished second in the regular-season standings. The Charger soccer team finished second in the regular-season and the basketball team qualified for the conference tournament.  

Philadelphia finished third behind tournament titles in basketball and cross country and qualifying for the conference tournament in soccer. The Rams also finished second in both the tennis regular-season and conference tournaments.

Post University moved up to fourth after a very strong spring season that saw the Eagles win a conference championship in golf and advance to the CACC Tournament championship game in baseball. Post also played in the soccer and basketball conference tournaments.

The top five is rounded out by Felician College and Bloomfield College, who tied with 8.85 points. Felician won the conference tournament title in basketball and was third at the cross country championship. The Golden Falcons and Deacons tied for the regular-season basketball North Division crown, while the Deacons also played in the soccer tournament championship game.

Philadelphia took the women’s cup with 11.9 points by winning a cross country team championship, advancing to the volleyball tournament championship match and securing berths to the soccer, tennis, basketball, softball and lacrosse conference tournaments. The Lady Rams were the No. 2 seed in the South Division in the CACC Basketball Tournament. Additionally, the soccer team tied Georgian Court University for the regular-season championship in the fall.

Georgian Court was close behind with 11.7 points. The Lions had a solid spring season, winning the lacrosse regular-season and conference tournaments, and advancing to the softball tournament championship game. GCU also won the volleyball championship in the fall and played in the soccer tournament championship match.

Dominican placed third due to CACC Tournament berths in volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball. The Lady Chargers won the CACC Softball Tournament and shared the regular-season crown, and finished third at the cross country championships. DC finished second in the North Division regular-season standings for volleyball and played in the semi-finals of the soccer tournament.

Holy Family University was fourth, winning the basketball South Division regular-season championship and advancing to the tournament final. The Tigers also won the women’s soccer tournament championship and qualified for the volleyball, tennis, softball and lacrosse conference tournaments. The Tiger lacrosse team fell in the tournament championship match and the softball team was the No. 4 seed in the CACC Tournament.

Wilmington rounded out the top five with 9.3 points. The Wildcats made CACC Tournament appearances in soccer, basketball and lacrosse and finished fifth at the cross country championships.
