BEARS EARN SPLIT WITH DEVILS IN FIRST CACC ACTION OF 2017

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The aftermath of a snowstorm silenced the Bears bats for two weeks but the Bloomfield College softball team finally got a cracked at their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opening games and earned a split on the road with the Devils of USciences on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears clawed out a commanding, 9-0 decision in Game 1 on the back of senior work-horse, Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, Pa.) who went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate including 2 home runs and drove in 4 RBI. Bloomfield's ace then turned around and pitched a shutout from the circle and fanned 8 batters in her fourth win of the year.

Game 2 started out rocky as the Devils dug out 6 runs in the second inning and Bloomfield was unable to recover.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • 3rd inning – After failing to find a pitched she liked in her first at-bat and drawing a walk, Wilson teed off on a ball in the top of the third to get the Bears on the board first with a solo shot
  • 4th inning - The Bloomfield hitters came back for more in fourth as the flood gates opened and the visitors put up a six spot beginning with a 2 RBI double by senior, Mariah Frazier (Port Angeles, W.A.) that drove in classmate, Aubrey Orr (Gallup, N.M.) and Ashlee Rivera (Jersey City, N.J.). Freshman Delanie Cruz (Chicago, I.L.) drove in her classmate Mya Lopez (Vineland, N.J.) with a single to center field. Wilson cleared the bases with another ball over the fence that plated 3 runs for the Bears and put them in the drivers seat for good
  • 6th inning – Bloomfield invoked the mercy-rule with two more runs in the sixth inning and Wilson closed the door on USciences in the bottom half and pushed her record to 4-1 in 2017

How It Happened – Game 2

  • 1st inning – The Bears struck first again in game 2 as Wilson drove in Frazier who led off the game with a double to left field. Senior Stephanie Miller (Temecula, Calif.) got the nod in the circle for Bloomfield and delivered a 1-2-3 inning in her first action since March 9th
  • 2nd inning – The Devils got down to business and knocked Miller out of the circle with six runs on five hits and took command of the game, forcing coach Ashton Corley to go to her bullpen. Junior transfer, Kiersten Coho (East Freedom, Pa.) came in to retire two outs and got Bloomfield to the dug out to regroup
  • 6th inning – After USciences tacked on another run in the fifth, the Bears put on their rally caps and pushed across three runs in the sixth as back-to-back doubles from Frazier and Cruz led off the frame. Senior Paige Lafferty (Liberty Hill, T.X.) drove in a run next with double and later scored when Orr laced a single to left field
  •  It was too little, too late though with the Devils closing the door on Bloomfield's come back attempt in the 7th and picked up their second victory of the season and preserved the split for the day

Up Next: The Bears are scheduled to play their home opener Monday against Kutztown University. The double-dip is set to start at 2:30 pm depending on field conditions. Check back for more information and updates on Monday's battle.
