BEARS VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS MAVERICKS AND REDHAWKS TO MOVE TO 7-1 ON THE SEASON

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Junior transfer, Valerie Bermudez (San Juan, P.R.) recorded a game-high 20 kills to go along with 15 digs to help propel the Bears over Mercy College 3-0 in game one of Saturday afternoon's action on the road. Senior Diannmarie Rivera (Trujillo Alto, P.R.) led Bloomfield with 16 kills and 8 digs as they took down Roberts Wesleyan College in straight sets in their second match of the day at Mercy College.
  
With the pair of wins, Bloomfield improved to 7-1 on the year with all of their games being played on the road so far in 2015.
 
In the first game, Mercy jumped out of the gate with a 6-2 advantage before the Bears settled in and tied the game at 8-8. The teams battled back and forth for the opening set with Bloomfield clawing out a 26-24 victory to go up 1-0. The Mavericks played the Bears tough, with each set becoming increasingly more difficult than the one before it however Bloomfield came away with the sweep, posting scores of 25-23 and 29-27 in the second and third sets respectively. Junior setter Edmarie Freytes (San Juan, P.R.) recorded a game-high 25 assists while Jacquelyn Madlock (Alta Loma, C.A.) added 17 assists against the Mavericks.
 
In the second match of the day, the Bears played a close first set, 25-23 but seized control of set two, 25-18 and set three, 25-21 to complete the double sweep in tri-match action. 
 
Rivera tied the game-high with her sixteen kills during the second match and Bermudez chipped in eight kills while each player finished up with eight digs. Freytes added 19 assists in the second match and senior Melissa Yepez (Paramount, Calif.) served up three aces against the Redhawks. Elizabeth Meyer (Otsego, M.N.) and Nayade Paulino (Paterson, N.J.) had three and two blocks respectively and sophomore Libero, Samantha Rios dug out fourteen for the Bears during the win.
 
Bloomfield will return to the court in a week for their home opener against conference rival, Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Sept. 26 and regional foe, Southern Connecticut State University. The tri-match will be the first held at the Bloomfield Gym in four years and begin at 12:00pm against the Griffins and then a 4:00pm showdown with the Owls.
