Softball Completes 2013 Season With Split Versus Holy Family
Morgan Dunn's Walk-Off Hit Gives UB Win In Game One
Stratford, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team wrapped up its 2013 season with a doubleheader split against the visiting Holy Family University Tigers on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at DeLuca Field. The Purple Knights took game one, 8-7, in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning, and HFU won game two, 4-3. UB finishes the 2013 campaign with an 18-32 overall record, and Holy Family is 24-22 overall.
In the opener, Bridgeport trailed 7-5 entering the both of the seventh inning, but the team rebounded to grab the win scoring three runs on a Holy Family error and a walk-off, two-run single by sophomore Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, N.Y.). Dunn's walk-off hit, her second safety of the game, made a winner of freshman pitcher Jennine Walsh (Langley, B.C., Canada), who finished her first season in a UB uniform with a 9-12 record.
Graduate student Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) and sophomore Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) each had two hits in the opener, and sophomore Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.) also knocked in two runs for the Purple Knights in game one.
In game two, Wojcik, Griesinger and Katelyn Wall (Soph., Madison, Conn.) each had an RBI, and junior pitcher Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser, as she fired a complete game in which she allowed only five hits; while striking out six and walking only two. Irrera wrapped up 2013 with a 9-15 record.
The UB softball team increased its win total for the third straight season with its 18 victories in 2013.
