PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Bears women's basketball team returned to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Semifinal Round for the third consecutive year but suffered a 79-67 setback against the Jefferson Rams. Bloomfield's season drew to a close Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center on the campus of Jefferson University, the host of the CACC Basketball Championships in 2018.
Kiamsha Bynes (Piscataway, NJ) led the Bears with 17 points (13 in the 2
nd half), on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while the Bears All-CACC First Team member,
Zhane Robinson (Newark, NJ) finished with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double.
Bobbi Floyd (Las Vegas, NV) chipped in 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting to round out Bloomfield's double-digit point-getters.
Early turnovers plagued the North Division's top seed and Jefferson capitalized with a 7-2 advantage to begin the opening quarter. Bloomfield responded with six straight points to regain the lead heading into the first media timeout. The Rams turned up the intensity down the final minutes of the first quarter and knocked in back-to-back three-pointers that secured an 18-15 edge heading into the second.
Jefferson picked up the sharp-shooting in the next frame, dialing up another pair from long-range and eventually extended the Bears deficit to 13 with 5:21 to play before intermission. The teams exchanged baskets back and forth with the South Division's 2
nd seed burying a three as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Robinson led the scoring effort heading into the locker rooms with 8 points but Bloomfield had no answers for the Rams' guard, Alynna Williams who was perfect across the first two quarters with 15 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor, all from deep range and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Bloomfield would need to find an answer for Williams and also turn up the offensive production in the second half to close the gap.
Bloomfield closed to within 10 points (77-67) with under a minute to play in the fourth but the Rams were up to the task and closed out the contest to advance to the league's championship game.
First year head coach,
Vanessa Watson and the Bears conclude the 2017-18 campaign with a successful regular season title, a 1st Team All-CACC member and postseason experience to build on for the future. After starting the year off 0-6, Watson pushed Bloomfield to 18-6 across their last 24 games in her college coaching debut. Robinson concludes her collegiate carreer with 891 points and 468 rebounds.
