Purple Knights Earn First Baseball Win Of 2023 With A 3-2 11-Inning Triumph Over Adelphi
Jeremy Rodrigues Drives In Game-Wining Run In A Sacrifice Fly
Myrtle Beach. S.C.-A sacrifice fly by sophomore Jeremy Rodrigues scored Craig Leonard (Grad., Holtsville, N.Y.) with winning run in the top of the eleventh inning to lift the University of Bridgeport baseball team to its first win of the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, a 3-2 extra innings triumph over the Adelphi University Panthers at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Both UB and Adelphi are now 1-3 on the young season.
The Purple Knights led the game 2-0 on RBIs by juniors Anthony Pascale (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Justin Leigh (Bridgeport, Conn.), but the Panthers plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest into extra innings.
Leigh and sophomore Michael Fletcher (Winter Park, Fla.) led the Bridgeport offense in Sunday's win, as they each had two hits.
Senior Tyler Solomon (Blue Point, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief over Adelphi, and freshman Tyler John (Stony Brook, N.Y.) slammed the door shut for the winners in the bottom of the eleventh putting Adelphi down in order with a pair of strike outs.
Bridgeport starter Brendan Palmer (Fr., Ansonia, Conn.) was outstanding in his first collegiate start firing six innings of shutout ball in which he allowed only four hits with five strike outs and no walks.
Up next, the UB baseball will look to start a winning streak in South Carolina taking on the College of Staten Island in Myrtle Beach at 11:00 a.m.
