BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Bloomfield College volleyball team used a steady attack to defeat Georgian Court University in straight sets Saturday afternoon during the Bears 'Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Game'. The 3-0 victory marked Bloomfield's fifth consecutive win and improved their overall record to 19-4 on the season and 12-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play. The loss dropped the Lions to 17-13 on the year and 10-5 in conference action.
Bloomfield established the tone for the opening set on four-straight service aces by junior
Edmarie Freytes (San Juan, P.R.) as the Bears commanded a 6-0 lead to start. Set 1 also saw the home team pick up 12 kills led by junior,
Valerie Bermudez (San Juan, P.R.) and senior
Diannmarie Rivera (Trujillo Alto, P.R.). The CACC North Division leaders eventually took the set, 25-15 and controlled the match the rest of the way.
Set 2 saw a similar outbreak with the Lions falling behind 0-4 punctuated by two service aces from Rivera. The visitors never fully recovered and Bloomfield went on to take a 25-19 win and a 2-0 edge in the match. Georgian Court picked up the intensity in the third set and battled to a 10-10 tie before the Bears growled for an 8-0 spurt. Bloomfield closed the door on the Lions, 25-18 and secured their fourth straight league win.
Bermudez ended the afternoon with a game-high 12 kills and Rivera picked up 9. Sophomore
Alex Glasper (Hainesport, N.J.) led the Bears with a game-high 3 blocks followed by
Elizabeth Meyer (Otsego, M.N.) and
Nayade Paulino (Paterson, N.J.) who each recorded two. The offense flowed thru
Jacquelyn Madlock (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Freytes who had 15 and 13 assists respectively. Freytes also finish the contest tying her season-high with 6 service aces.
Bloomfield's now turns their sights to the Cougars of Caldwell University, taking a short road trip to battle their bitter North Division rivals on Wednesday at 7:00pm.
