Griffins Defeat Barry in First Game of Two Game Series in Florida

R.J Huth hit his first home run of the season and Will Shaffer pitched five innings of two-run ball as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team won for the first time on their Florida spring trip, defeating Barry University 6-3 Monday afternoon.

The Griffins improve to 2-6 overall while Barry falls to 6-12.

Huth's (Fairless Hills, Pa.) home run in the third inning, a solo shot to left field tied the game at 1-1.  The Buccaneers would add a run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead before the Griffins would explode for five runs in the top half of the sixth.

Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) singled to start the inning.  Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.) and Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.)  followed with bunt singles to load the bases.  John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) drew a walk to bring home the tying run and Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) drove in two more with a single to left field and advanced as the left fielder mishandled the ball, allowing Contoudis to score, giving Chestnut Hill a 5-2 lead.  Two batters later Nick Delacruz (Kendall Park, N.J.) launched a sacrifice fly to score Dietz with the sixth run.

Dan Rockenbach  (Holland, Pa.) came on in relief of Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) (1-0) who allowed just five hits and struck out four over five innings.  He held the Buccaneers scoreless until the ninth inning when the host team strung together back-to-back doubles to plate a run before Rockenbach pitched out of the jam to earn his first save of the season.

The Chestnut Hill college baseball team is back in action again tomorrow against Barry with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
