Baseball Powers Past Concordia, 18-7

Abel registered his first-career homerun

LAKE WORTH, Florida (February 29, 2020) – The Stonehill College baseball team came back in the bottom of the third after a 6-0 deficit to defeat Concordia (N.Y.) College, 18-7, in their second matchup of the season at the Santaluces Sports Complex in non-conference play.

Key Moments:

  • Neither team put runs on the board until the third inning, as the Clippers strung together six hits for six runs and a 6-0 lead in the top of the frame. The inning included two doubles and four singles.
  • Stonehill was able to respond with four runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Clippers walked in a run and senior Rob Duarte's second double of the season drove in three runs for a 6-4 deficit.
  • The Skyhawks fended off the Clippers in the top of the fourth as a RBI single from Mike Swanholm and a three-run blast from Matt Farragher put Stonehill up 8-6 in the bottom of the inning.
  • Both teams each put a run in the fifth, and then Stonehill opened up the game with five runs in the sixth including Duarte's second double of the game, driving in three runs. Matt Donlan scored Duarte on a RBI single, and Chris Roberti reached on an error for the fifth run of the inning.
  • The Skyhawks added four more runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings to extend their lead to 11, 18-7. Noah Lucier singled, driving home Mike Maher in the bottom of the seventh, while Thomas Quinn doubled, Swanholm recorded a sacrifice fly, and Ryan Abel homered for three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Notables:

  • Duarte tallied his second and third doubles of the season, while O'Halloran also recorded his first double of the season.
  • Farragher and Abel launched their first-career homeruns, as Farragher tallied three RBI and Abel's was a solo shot.
  • Brendan Kelly earned his first-career win on the mound.
