Eight Firebirds Score En Route to First Victory of the Season

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's men's Lacrosse team defeated Caldwell University 14-12, in their home opener, Wednesday afternoon. The Firebirds improved to 1-2 on the season and the Cougars fell to 1-3.

Eight Firebirds made their way on the scoreboard, with Joseph Cote leading the way with four goals and Kendall Jones right behind with three and a game-high six ground balls. Carnell Lofton Jr. also added two goals while helping the Firebirds win 16-28 face-offs. Matthew Miller had a game-high nine saves.

UDC struck first with Emmanuel Jackson Jr sinking a feed from Lofton Jr in the opening seconds of play. The Cougars would respond with a goal of their own leading to a back and forth between the two teams, with the scoreboard tied at 2 going into the second quarter. 

The Firebirds took flight in the second quarter, outscoring the visiting team 9-3 to open up an 11-5 lead going into the half. Cote led the way scoring all four of his goals in that quarter.

The second half of the game saw the Cougars cut the deficit to just two, but a goal by Daniel Orebiyi with 4:45 remaining in regulation secured the 14-12 victory for the Firebirds.

UDC (1-2, 0-0 ECC) will host Molloy College in their conference opener on Saturday with an expected tip-off time of noon. The game will be live-streamed on the ECC network.
