GARDEN CITY, New York – The American International College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Wilmington University on Saturday, August 27 in a matchup of two teams receiving votes in the preseason United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Rankings.
The Yellow Jackets now stand 0-1-1 on the campaign.
As with the team's matchup against Post University – also receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll – two days prior, the first half went by without either side scoring. The Wildcats had the first half's two shots on target, but the bids by Marcus Hedemann in the 18th minute and by Osiel Robledo in the 42nd minute were both turned aside by goalkeeper Lucas Morales-Fernandes.
In the second half, Wilmington struck for the game's first goal. Mads-Emil Roestbjaerg took a pass deep into the right side of the AIC box and fired across the middle to Marius Skattum Dahl for a one-timer into the left side of the net in the 48th minute.
Both teams generated more looks in the second half, but ultimately it was AIC finding the twine next to equalize. Along the left sideline just above midfield, Samir Regragui and Sean Menacho executed a give-and-go to get Regragui possession behind a number of Wilmington defenders. Regragui took one touch forward before slotting a pass into the left side of the box for a run by Simba Pelletier, who confidently flicked the ball into the right corner of the net in the 71st minute for his and the team's first of the season.
With the score even, both sides defended well the rest of the way, with just one shot on goal for each team in the final 19 minutes after Pelletier's goal. The whistle blew at the 90-minute mark, signaling the game's end in a tie.
Morales-Fernandes ended with four total saves in the game, with his counterpart, Bas Markus, stopping three.
AIC finishes its three-game season-opening road trip at the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m.
