Women’s Basketball Captures Double Win

Tiffanie Adair registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Virginia State women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 campaign with a 63-50 triumph over Bloomfield in the Chick-fil-A Lady Viking Tipoff Tournament before 415 fans on Nov.9.
 
Lamesha Deal led the Trojans with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Jessica Lyons finished with 10 points.
 
The Trojans built a 33-20 halftime lead in route to the win. After battling on even terms in the early-going, the Trojans built their largest lead, seven, at halftime. Virginia State led by as many as 18 points down the stretch.
 
Virginia State outrebounded Bloomfield 54-35 and scored 32 points in the paint in recording the win.
 
On Nov. 10, Virginia State (2-0) topped Belmont Abbey (1-1), 74-56, in the final game of the Chick-fil-A Viking Shootout. Virginia State led by three points at the half before pulling away to record their second win of the season.

Belmont Abbey built a 26-21 lead, its largest of the game, with 4:20 to go in the first half. The Trojans reeled off 10 straight points and forced four consecutive turnovers to regain the lead. Virginia State led 31-28 at halftime.

After Belmont Abbey closed to 33-32 before Virginia State went on a 24-6 run over the next 9:16 to increase the lead to 57-38.

Da'Shea Jones came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points for the Trojans while teammates Lamesha Deal had 14 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Alexandria Massado also scored in double figures for Virginia State, finishing with 10 points.

The Trojan's women basketball team hosts Barber Scotia in the home opener on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. at Daniel Gymnasium.
