BEARS BASEBALL OPEN SEASON WITH 6-4 SETBACK AGAINST LIU POST

LANTANA, Fla. - On Tuesday afternoon, the Bloomfield College baseball team got their 2015 season underway with a, 6-4, setback against the Pioneers of LIU Post. The Bears (0-1) let a 4-0 advantage slip away after their ace starting pitcher, Francesco Scudiero (Brooklyn, N.Y.) turned the ball over to the bullpen in the seventh inning.

Scudiero scattered eight hits across six scoreless innings of work, striking out nine in his first outing of 2015. The Pioneers (1-4) then rallied to put together seven hits on the Bears relievers and used a two-run eighth and a four-run ninth to come away with the win.

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning but Bloomfield struck in the second when catcher, Cristopher Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) hit a shot down the right field line that scored senior, Shadi Azar (South San Francisco, C.A.) from second. Azar reached scoring position on a two-out double to right field to setup Bloomfield's first run of the year.

LIU's starter, Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) served up a lead off walk in the third to freshman Isaac Pichardo (Passaic, N.J.) who eventually came around to score on a wild pitch and Bloomfield held a 2-0 advantage. The Bears added a third run in the fourth when a passed ball allowed Azar to cross home plate again.

Another Jagiello lead off walk in the fifth to freshman Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) paid dividends when a Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) single to left field plated his classmate and gave Bloomfield the 4-0 advantage.

The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of both the fifth and sixth innings with runners in scoring positions with two outs. Scudiero struck out outfielder, Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and second baseman, Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) respectively to end the threat in each inning and complete his day.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning senior, Lucas Junger (Waretown, N.J.) came on in relief and gave up a one-out double followed with a triple that scored the pioneers first run. Then Maccarone beat out an infield single that allowed another run to cross the plate. Maccarone would advance to second on a throwing error by the Bears' third baseman, Carlos Flete (Jamaica, N.Y.). With LIU still threatening, Junger pitched his way out of the jam to send the Bears to the eighth still holding a two-run lead.

In the eighth freshman reliever, Steven Acosta (Lakewood, N.J.) made his Bloomfield debut but quickly began with a lead off walk. Acosta compounded the lead off mistake with a throwing error on a pick off attempt that advanced the Pioneer base runner all the way to third. A single through the left side scored the runner making it 4-3. Bowers came to the plate and smacked a one out double to left center that scored a pinch runner and tied the game at 4-4.

Acosta's afternoon was done, although he was still on the hook for Bowers on base, freshman Isaiah Arroyo (Tampa, Fla.) stepped on the mound for his first action as a Bear. With two outs and runners on second and third, Maccarone stepped to the plate for LIU and delievered a two-run single to center, giving the Pioneers a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.

Acosta (0-1) picked up the loss on the afternoon giving up three earned runs on two hits, a walk, a balk, a wild pitch and an error.

Head coach Jeff Watson and the Bears look to re-group tomorrow afternoon with a game against Nyack. The first pitch is set to go at 2:30pm.
