Holy Family
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team battled the visiting Holy Family University Tigers to extra innings in both games of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on a soggy Saturday in Seaside Park, and the two teams split the pair of contests with UB taking game one, 4-3, in eight innings, and the Tigers winning the nightcap, 3-0, in 10 innings. With the Split, the Purple Knights are now 21-18 overall and 11-7 in conference play. Holy Family moves to 11-23 overall and 9-7 in the CACC.
In the opener, UB won the game in the bottom of the eighth when freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.), who had a pair of hits and an RBI in game one, started the frame with a double. Senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) moved Jones to third with a perfect sacrifice bunt, and she then came home with the winning run on a fielders' choice grounder up the first base line by senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.).
Meg McFarland (Sr., Monroe, Conn.) and Alex Hughes (Soph., Joliet, Ill.) also knocked in runs for the winners in game one.
Freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) worked a complete game in the opener to raise her season record in the pitching circle to an impressive 14-6, as she allowed eight hits and struck out six with no walks over the eight innings of play.
In game two, HFU scored three runs in the top of the tenth on bases clearing double by Madison Grubb to plate the only runs in the contest.
Gabby Simms (Grad. Phoenixville, Pa.) led UB with three hits in the nightcap.
Samantha Schiebe was the hard-luck loser in the pitching circle working a season-high 10 inning complete game in which she allowed only two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one base on balls.
Up next, the UB softball teams hits the road for a CACC doubleheader at Dominican University New York on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
