BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College men's soccer team took to the road and pulled out a 2-1 decision over the Mavericks of Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Wednesday afternoon. With the non-conference victory the Bears improved to 5-2-2 overall while Mercy fell to 4-5 on the season.
Bloomfield struck first in the opening period when
Shacquille Brown (Springfield, St. Thomas) delivered a ball to junior,
Shaunavon DeSouza (Montego Bay, Jamaica) which the visiting team's striker buried into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year. The Bears kept Mercy on their heels in the first half with a 6-2 advantage in shots as they headed into the break up 1-0.
DeSouza continued his stellar play in the second half pushing a ball past the Maverick's keeper to put Bloomfield up 2-0 in the 61
st minute of play. The second goal of the game for Bloomfield's striker came off an assist by
Paulo Claudio (San Paulo, Brazil).
Mercy seized an opportunity down the stretch of the second period to cut the Bears lead in half on a penalty kick in the 81
st minute. Juan Gatti (Buenos Aries, Argentina) buried his kick in the bottom left corner of the net passed
Jovan Stanojkovic (Pancevo, Serbia) after a Bloomfield foul in the box.
The Mavericks had many opportunities to find the equalizer goal but the Bears defense stiffened in front of Stanojkovic who finished the match with three saves and picked up his first win of 2015.
The Bears are scheduled to return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon to face the Rams of Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) north vs. south showdown. The battle is set for a 2:30 pm start with the weather permitting as hurricane Joaquin threatens to hit the East Coast.
