Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split a Senior Day doubleheader against visiting Alliance University on Monday afternoon, as the Purple Knights took game two, 9-0, behind a one-hit complete game shutout from Joe Nemchek (Grad., Trumbull, Conn.) after falling in the opener, 9-4. With the split, the Purple Knights are now 8-34 overall and 4-16 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Alliance is now 2-40 overall and 1-18 in the CACC.
Nemchek was simply outstanding from his first pitch on Monday, as he worked 6.1 innings of no-hit baseball before allowing Alliance their only hit of the game, a single to left field. He finished with the complete game shutout to raise his season record to 2-3, as he fanned 13 batters and walked three.
The UB offense banged out a total of 12 hits in game two led by Craig Leonard (Grad., Holtsville, N.Y.) with three hits and one RBI, and junior Justin Leigh (Bridgeport, Conn.) and senior Jacob Rich (Northwood, N.H.), each had two hits; plus Leigh drove in a run.
Sophomore Jeremy Rodrigues (Monroe, Conn.) slammed his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the nightcap, a three-run shot in the second inning.
In the opener, sophomore Marcos Dominguez (Danbury, Conn.) drove in two runs and freshman James Ackerman (Smithtown, N.Y.) also knocked in a run.
Up next, the UB baseball team closes out its 2023 home slate on Tuesday afternoon when the Purple Knights host Dominican University New York in a CACC contest. First pitch in Seaside Park is set for 3:00 p.m.
