ORANGEBURG, NY – After being named to the All-Conference First Team earlier in the day, junior
Paulo Claudio (San Paulo, Brazil) scored the opening goal of the game as sixth-seeded Bloomfield College won its quarterfinal match of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament, 4-2 over third-seeded Dominican College Monday afternoon at the DC Soccer Field.
The Bears upped their record to 9-6-2, while the Chargers fell to 7-10 with the loss. Bloomfield now moves forward to the semifinal round on Thursday at 2:30 pm as the CACC Tournament shifts to its' Championship site in Waterbury, Conn. The Bears will battle the tournament hosts, second-seeded, Post University at Municipal Stadium.
Claudio staked the Bears to a 1-0 lead in the 24
th minute of the game as
Shaunavon DeSouza (Montego Bay, Jamaica) sent a beautiful left-foot pass which the Bloomfield leading striker buried into the back of the net for his fourteenth goal of the season. Claudio switched hats less than two minutes later providing a cross-field pass to
Thulani Hove (Highland Park, N.J.) for a one-timer volley that was Sports Center worthy and doubled the visiting team's advantage at 2-0. The Bloomfield goalie,
Wilson Cisneros (Bronx, N.Y.) shut out the Chargers in the first half, recording five saves heading into the break.
DeSouza proved to be in a giving mood as he served up another assist in the second half to put the Bears in front 3-0 in the 57
th minute of play with
Amin Miller (Mondeville, Jamaica) benefiting on his second goal of the season. The Chargers finally broke thru at the 67:27 mark when Cisneros failed to clear a ball and Hallvard Kuloey scored during a scrum on the goal line in front of the Bears keeper. DeSouza put a quick end to the Chargers' celebration as he pulled the home team's keeper out after a pass from Miller and then side stepped him and pushed the ball into the empty net in the 70
th minute.
Dominican entered the tournament as winners of six out-of-their last seven CACC games and played with a sense of urgency the rest of the way but the Bears shut the door on any comeback hopes despite conceding a late 85
th minute goal. Cisneros finished the game with six saves for Bloomfield. The Chargers outshot the Bears 16-8 and took twelve of the games thirteen corner kicks.
