Host Mercy Nips UB Baseball 10-9 In 11 Innings
Purple Knights Will Open Their 2023 Home Schedule On Sunday At 1 PM With A Doubleheader Versus The Mavericks
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-After tying the game at 9-9 scoring two runs after two were out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the host Mercy College Mavericks (3-11) scored a run in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a two-out RBI single by Sean McAdams to lift Mercy to a 10-9 extra inning victory over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights (2-10) on Friday afternoon.
Trailing 7-5 heading into the top of the eighth, UB scored four runs to take a 9-7 lead on a two-RBI single by graduate student Craig Leonard (Holtsville, N.Y.), who had two hits on the day, and RBI-single by freshman Tyler Hodella (Miller Place, N.Y.), who also had two hits on the afternoon, plus a wild pitch.
Junior Angel Irby (Bridgeport, Conn.) had two hits and a run batted in on Friday, plus he also made several stellar defensive plays.
Classmate Justin Leigh (Bridgeport, Conn.) also drove in two runs for the Purple Knights.
The nine runs scored by Bridgeport on Friday are a season high.
Matt Wild (Fr., Smithtown, N.Y.), the fourth of five Purple Knights' hurlers on the day, took the loss out of the UB bullpen.
The same two teams will close out their weekend series with a doubleheader (two seven-inning games) in Seaside Park on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., as the Purple Knights open their 2023 home schedule.
