Firebirds Feature Three Double Figure Scorers in Season Opener Victory over The Cougars

CALDWELL, NJ- The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team opened the season with a 63-58 win over Caldwell University, on Saturday afternoon at the Corino Court. The Firebirds improve to a 1-0 record on the season and the Cougars fall 0-1. Returning guard Latavia Jackson led the field with 22 points going  8-10 at the free-throw line, 6-11 from the field, and 2-5 from the arc all while managing to grab nine boards. Freshmen forwards Ronnasia Blatch-Huggins and Aiyana Ellis also scored in the double figures. Blatch-Huggins posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 19 rebounds and Ellis had 13 points and 5 rebounds. The Firebirds came out blazing outshooting the Cougars 22-9, in the first quarter with Ellis leading the way with eight points. The second quarter saw Caldwell rally to make up the deficit but still trailing 25-30 going into the half. The Cougars went on to have their best quarter of the game offensively outscoring the Firebirds 19-16 to make it a two-point game going into the final stretch. UDC would outscore Caldwell 17-14 in the last quarter to secure their first victory, with Jackson leading the way offensively with nine points and Blatch-Huggins putting in work on defense with seven rebounds. UDC (1-0) will be back in action tomorrow at noon as they look to conclude the two-day tournament with a match-up against Southern N.H.
