Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team stayed red-hot as the Purple Knights earned their 12 victory in their last 14 outings by recording a home Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over the visiting Bloomfield College Bears in Seaside Park on Wednesday afternoon. Bridgeport won the opener, 4-2, and completed the sweep with an 11-3 run-rule victory in six inning in game two.
With the two wins, UB is now 15-12 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Bloomfield is now 4-23 overall and 1-2 in the CACC.
In game one, the Purple Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as senior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore Alex Hughes (Joliet, Ill.) drove in runs, but the visiting tied the game with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the fifth.
UB would then take the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth on RBI double by freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) and senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.)
The trio of McFarland, Hughes and Yates, each had two hits for the winners in the opener.
In the nightcap, Bridgeport trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before the exploded for nine runs to notch the run-rule victory.
A grand slam home run by Mya Jones, her team-leading fifth round-tripper and second grand slam of the season, highlighted the nine-run, game-winning outburst.
Junior Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the 14-hit Bridgeport offensive attack in game two, as she went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.
In the pitching circle, freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) won both games of the doubleheader to raise her season record to 9-4.
In game one, Vise fired a five-hitter allowing only five hits, one earned run with five strikeouts and zero walk over seven innings.
In game two, she worked 1.2 innings in relief in which she allowed only an unearned run.
The UB softball team will next be in action on Saturday, when the Purple Knights travel to Philadelphia for a CACC doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College. First pitch is set for 12 noon.
With the forecast for cold temperatures on Thursday, the Purple Knights home games versus Pace University have been moved to Thursday, April 20 with a 2:30 p.m. start for the doubleheader.
