Wilmington, Del.-The University of Bridgeport softball team got excellent pitching in both ends of a road doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom to open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Delaware, as the host Lightning took the opener, 3-0, and the Purple Knights came back to win game two, 7-0. With the split, UB is now 8-11 overall (winners of five of their last six outings) and 1-1 in the CACC. Goldey-Beacom is now 16-6 overall and also 1-1 in conference action.
In the opener, Bridgeport outhit the Lightning, 10-6, but could not plate a run. The hosts scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Samantha Schiebe (Sr., Monroe, Conn.) and Mya Jones (Fr., Milford, Del.) each had two hits to lead the UB offense in game one.
Freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) was the hard-luck loser in the pitching circle in the opener firing a complete game in which she allowed on six hit with three stakeouts and no walks.
In the nightcap, Samantha Schiebe had her second straight outstanding pitching outing of the week, as she raised her season record to 3-3 firing a two-hit shutout over the seven innings with three strikeouts and just one walk.
In game two, Mya Jones, who notched a pair of hits that contest as well, blasted her second home run of the season to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead in the third inning, which they never relinquished.
Bridgeport blew the game open in the late innings scoring twice in the sixth and crossing the plate four times in the seventh inning.
Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.) continued her hot start to 2023 with two hits and three runs batting in the game two victory.
Up next, the UB softball team returns to the friendly confines of Seaside Park to continue CACC play on Tuesday afternoon, when Post University makes the short trip down Route 8 from Waterbury for a 2:300 p.m. twinbill.
