Griffins Bested By Bears in Season Opener

9/3/2015 6:14:00 PM

Box Score Old Westbury, N.Y. - (9/3/2015) – After spotting the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) a 2-0 lead in the opening half of today's season opener, a third goal early in the second half put Chestnut Hill College in a bad spot, down 3-0. Senior midfielder Nicholas Jaffé (Sao Paulo, Brazil) picked up where he left off in 2014 but he provided the lone Griffin goal in a 4-1 final.

NYIT (1-0) outshot Chestnut Hill College (0-1), 21-5, and capitalized on some early momentum with their third attempt, from sophomore defenseman Alberto Salcedo (Grenada, Spain), giving them a 1-0 lead at 20:20. The Griffins looked to echo the blast with one of their own, but an unsuccessful corner kick serve from senior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) at 26:53 was the best Griffin opportunity before freshman midfielder Daniel Lembo (Hicksville, N.Y.) widened the Bear advantage to 2-0 off a feed from junior defender Ben Wilson (Southampton, England) at 36:01.

Following the break, the Griffins missed on two early opportunities due to a pair of offside offenses (47:52 & 52:01). The Bears adjusted with a few substitutions before sophomore midfielder Krishen Patel (Buckinghamshire, England) put the finishing touches on the win by bookending a goal from Jaffé at 73:14, 3-1, with an assist to freshman forward Simon-Peter Omooba (London, England) at 68:02, 2-1, and a goal of his own at 73:30, 4-1.

The Bears spread their 22 shots among 12 players while sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Rico (Elmhurst, N.Y.) made two saves in the win (1-0).

Freshman forward Jason Burns (Douglassville, Pa.) found the foot of Jaffé for the Griffins' first tally of the 2015 season. Jaffé took three strikes at the Bear goal with Amaya and Burns supplying the Griffins' other two attempts. Junior goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) totaled six saves in the loss (0-1).

The men's soccer team gets their next chance for a win on Sunday, September 6, when they visit Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
