BLOOMFIELD HOLDS OFF CHARGERS, 80-71 TO CLAIM CACC NORTH DIVISION TITLE

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Bloomfield College men's basketball team secured the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division regular-season title with an, 80-71 victory over Dominican College Tuesday evening at the Den. The win marked the second-consecutive year the Bears captured the title as the North's top squad. The night featured a monstrous performance from Marcus Fleming (Linden, N.J.) who netted his fifth double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 boards. Fleming led four Bears in double-digit scoring including Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J.) who dropped 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor and 10 points off the bench from Robert Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.). Bloomfield also celebrated Senior Night as Ahmid Williams (Monroe, N.J.), who recorded 11 points, and Carlos Marrero Simon (Gran Canaria, Spain) were honored before the regular-season finale began.

How It Happened
  • The first half proved to be a see-saw battle that the Chargers came out on top of, 38-36. Fleming and Williams combined for 17 points in the opening period and the home team shot 41.9 percent from the field (13-31) and a perfect 7-for-7 from the line
  • The Bears top scorer, Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J.) sat out most of the half with foul trouble that paved the way for Lewis to pick up more minutes on the court. Lewis made his presence felt as he knocked in 2-out of-4 buckets before the teams went into the locker rooms
  • The second half belonged to Bloomfield and the home crowd energized the team out of the break. The Bears ran off eight-straight points and claimed a 44-38 lead. The advantage grew to twelve (51-39) after five consecutive points from Fleming
  • Dominican came into the game looking to overthrow Bloomfield from their perch atop the North Division and climbed to within, 54-48 as the clock read 12:07. But the Bears remained poised and rebuilt their lead, this time by as-many-as 17 (70-53)
  • Bloomfield settled for the 9-point victory when the buzzer sounded and the Chargers had to settle for second place in the CACC North after the setback. Fleming poured in 15 of his points in the final frame and shot 50.0 percent from the floor (5-of-10)

Up Next: Bloomfield will host the opening round of the CACC Playoffs this Saturday against USciences at 2:00 pm. The Devils enter the quarterfinal round as the South Division's #4 seed and confident after taking down the Bears back on January 7th. Bloomfield's confidence comes in their proven post-season history of never losing a quarterfinal match up at home in over five years.
