Late Runs Push Post Past STAC, 3-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team continued their 4-game road trip, facing off with Post University on Saturday evening under the lights in Myrtle Beach. A two-run sixth inning, on the strength of an Eagles 2-run home-run by pinch-hitter Matt Goehrig was enough to give Post a 3-1 victory over the Spartans.

Post would get themselves on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning via an RBI sacrifice fly to right field by catcher Tyler Keith, off of STAC starter Angelo Baez, scoring Brycin Hernandez to make it 1-0. STAC would quickly tie things up in the next half inning, as after a James Versage single and a two-base error off of Eagles hurler Noah Meeks would leave him standing at third base, Andrew Guerra would ground out to first base, scoring the aforementioned Versage and squaring the game at 1-1.

Things would settle down until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Spartan reliever Ryan Lutz would enter the game in place of starter Angelo Baez. Lutz would pick up the first two outs of the inning, before giving up a single to Thomas Dirusso. Post University would then go to the bench and call on pinch-hitter Matt Goehrig to try and break the stalemate. Goehrig would do just that, as he would homer, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Brycin Hernandez would then hit a double, spelling the end of the evening for Lutz and STAC would call upon Yanni Orfanidis to get the final out, which he would successfully do, striking out Christian Aliberti.

The Spartans had one final chance to rally in the top of the seventh off of Eagles reliever Chas Cywin, who entered the game in the top of the fifth. Cywin would get Jonnathan Cepeda via a groundout for out number one. Anthony Maisano would then come to the plate and single, keeping the hopes of the maroon and gold alive. After an Andrew Jemison strikeout for the second out, Matthew Johnson would pick up a single himself, pushing Maisano to third and make for the possibility of a STAC comeback. However, it was not in the cards, as James Versage would groundout to third base, ending the game.

Spartan starter Angelo Baez went five innings, picking up the no-decision, while giving up five hits and a run, while walking two and striking out eight. Ryan Lutz would pick up the loss (0-1) in relief, giving up two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Yanni Orfanidis would get a third of an inning on the hill, picking up a strikeout.

Eagles hurler Ryan Meeks would also get a no-decision in this one, as he pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits and a run, while walking two and striking out three. Reliever Chas Cywin picked up his first win of the season, as he went the final two and a third innings for Post, giving up only three hits and striking out four.

STAC (1-2) wraps up their weekend trip to South Carolina on Sunday, as the Spartans take on Felician University beginning at noon.
