SOFTBALL RALLIES PAST DOMINICAN TO ADVANCE IN CACC TOURNAMENT

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Senior Veronica Cobos (Torrance, Calif.) singled down the left field line and scored junior Aubrey Orr (Gallup, N.M.) as the Bears broke thru in the eighth inning and eventually secured a 3-1 victory over the #2 seeded Chargers of Dominican College in game two of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament Thursday morning on the GCU Softball Field 2.

The win advanced the Bears (23-21) to the winners' bracket of the double-elimination tournament and setup a 4:00 pm first pitch for game eight of the day on Field 2. The loss dropped the Chargers (30-15-1) to the brink of elimination and a game six match up on Field 2 to be played at 2:00 pm in the CACC Tournament.

Junior, Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, P.A.) pitched a complete game for the Bears including seven shutout innings before the Chargers pushed across a single run in the extra frame. Wilson surrendered six hits, walked five batters and struck out five in eight innings of work.

The match up turned out to be a pitcher's duel as the Charger's ace held the Bloomfield offense in check for seven scoreless innings herself. Junior Paige Lafferty (Liberty Hill, T.X.) began the Bears' rally in the 8th with a lead-off single down the left field line. Orr laid down a bunt to move Lafferty over but the Dominican catcher pounced and threw a laser to second base that cut down the lead runner. Senior Greta Coleman (Indianola, W.A.) hit a single to center to move Orr into scoring position just before Cobos' RBI single. Faith Apolskis (Soquel, Calif.) blasted a double to right field that drove in Cobos and Coleman to give the #7 seeded Bears a 3-0 advantage.

Apolskis finished the game, 2-for-3 with 2 RBI while Cobos went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Bloomfield avenged their post-season elimination at the hands of Dominican from a year ago and advanced to take on #3 seeded Wilmington University at 4:00 pm.
