Ryan winner comes in 104th minute for Skyhawks first win in home opener


De Sousa-Vieira scored the first two goals of his collegiate career, including the winner in the 104th minute.

EASTON, Mass. (September 4, 2021) – Stonehill College battled back from a pair of first half deficits to force overtime before notching a 3-2 double-overtime triumph over Dominican (N.Y.) College in non-conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field this afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Freshman Iago Luiz De Sousa-Vieira scored his second goal of the afternoon 3:04 into the second overtime period to lift Stonehill to its first win of the season in his home opener.
  • De Sousa-Viera knocked in a rebound off an initial blocked attempt from sophomore Jacob Woznicki, who was credited with this second assist of the afternoon, as Stonehill erased a pair of deficits in rallying for the win.
  • Dominican held a 2-1 halftime lead on markers from juniors Ewan Gray and Marouf Barry in the first half.
  • Gray put the Chargers in front 17:16 into the contest with a penalty kick.

    De Sousa-Vieira equalized with a penalty for his first career goal for Stonehill less than nine minutes later at 25:52.
  • Barry pushed Dominican back in front with his first goal of the season, assisted by junior Maximino Casares Martinez, in the 33rd minute.
  • The Chargers carried that lead into halftime, but Stonehill leveled for a second time as senior Nico Rossitto scored the first goal of his career, assisted by both sophomores Shon Ryan and Woznicki.
  • Paddy Ryan's winner came during a scrum in front of the goal off Stonehill's seventh corner kick of the day.
  • Junior Andrew Hammersley finished with eight saves in the Stonehill goal, including a pair in the first overtime, the second of which came on a bid from junior Antonio Zhu Sanchez with just two seconds to play in the first extra session. He also stopped a second Dominican penalty try in the second half after recording two saves on the Chargers initial penalty goal in the first half, but was ruled to have come off his line on the first two.
  • Freshman Marcos Penaherrera registered seven saves in the Dominican goal.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill won its fourth-straight home opening match dating back to 2016 and is unbeaten over its last five home openers against non-conference competition.
