NEWARK, New Jersey – The American International College baseball team rose to 4-0 on the season by completing a sweep of Alliance University, 9-0 and 14-3, on Monday, February 27.
Almost all the offense came early in the first game, as AIC scored eight in the top of the opening inning. Brendan Edvardsen led off with a triple and was driven in by Michael Cruz's single. Jackson Haker then singled, and the duo on base both swiped bags, allowing Haker to score on a Kyle Leifert single. Chad Lavelle then drove in the two remaining runners with a triple to center, and was plated on a Brandon Gaul sacrifice fly. A pair of walks brough Edvardsen around again, and he smacked a double to left; Cruz followed with another single, driving in Edvardsen and Ryan Lavelle to make it 8-0.
The one remaining run came in the fourth; Chad Lavelle had an RBI groundout that pushed Haker home.
In game two, Cruz was plunked to lead off, and Haker doubled him home to give AIC a 1-0 lead just two batters in. Haker than started the offense in the third with a single, stealing second, and after a Kiernan Caffrey walk, both advanced on a wild pitch and then a balk. Carlos Pena then singled to bring in Caffrey. Chad Lavelle then singled, and ultimately was driven in by an Austin Bequeath sacrifice fly.
AIC put the game away in the fifth with a nine-run frame. Yeudy Ramirez smacked a two-run double down the line and then scored on a Ryan Lavelle single; he then came in on a Cruz hit. Haker walked, and the duo on base were both driven in by Chad Lavelle's single. Richie Segura walked, advancing to third on a Bequeath single that scored Lavelle, and Bequeath and Segura both came in on an error in right field.
Josh Frometa scored AIC's final run of the day, leading off the seventh with a double and scoring on a fly ball to left by Bequeath.
The trio of Adrian Quinonez, Aidan Leaf, and Javier Gonzalez combined for a four walk, one hit showing in game one; each of the first two did not allow a hit over three frames and fanned three, with Leaf being credited for the win. In game two, Jay Chiapetta went five strong frames, allowing a run on two hits with no walks and five strikeouts to earn the win.
AIC is next scheduled to head to Florida to open a four-game set with Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m.
