Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its 2023 season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Friday, and the Purple Knights dropped both ends of a doubleheader against regionally-ranked Molloy College, as the Lions won the opener, a nine-inning affair, 6-2, and completed the sweep with a 10-2 win in the seven-inning nightcap. With the two wins, Molloy is now 5-0 on the young season.
In the opener, Bridgeport outhit Molloy, 12-7, but the Lions tailed twice in three different innings to notch the victory.
Sophomore Michael Fletcher (Winter Park, Fla.) led UB with three hits in the season opener. Three Purple Knights, Anthony Pascale (Jr., Stony Brook, N.Y.), Jeremy Rodrigues (So., Monroe, Conn.) and newcomer, sophomore Vin Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.), each had two hits in the opening game defeat.
Mallon and sophomore Christian Ortiz (Linden, N.J.) drove in the Bridgeport runs in game one.
Senior Justin Nyarady (Trumbull, Conn.) drew the Opening Day start for Bridgeport and pitched well despite taking the loss, as he work six innings, allowing five hits, four runs (only one earned) with six strikeouts.
In game two, junior Justin Leigh (Bridgeport, Conn.) had two hits and drove in a run, and Craig Leonard (Grad., Holtsville, N.Y.) had the other RBI for the Purple Knights.
Justin Hafele (Grad., Shelton, Conn.) was the starter in game two and took the loss.
Up next, the UB baseball team will continue action in Myrtle Beach on Saturday with an 11 a.m. single game against LeMoyne College.
